Patient & provider concerns

Acute Care Alberta values your feedback. We work directly with acute care providers and organizations to build patient and provider experiences into system-wide improvements. Your voice helps us improve quality of Alberta’s healthcare system.

The following feedback mechanisms are available and involve Acute Care Alberta oversight.

Patient & family feedback mechanisms

Talk to your healthcare provider directly

Whenever possible we first encourage you to speak with your care team:

  • Your care team knows you best.
  • Discussing your questions or complaints may resolve issues right away.
  • This is often the best way to proceed.
  • You can also ask the manager or supervisor for help.

Direct your feedback to where you have a concern:

The Indigenous Support Line is an additional resource specifically for Indigenous Peoples seeking culturally sensitive assistance by trained Indigenous Listeners. The Indigenous Support Line is available provincially between 10 a.m. & 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.

How does my feedback get escalated?

If your patient concerns process with your care provider is complete, and you are unsatisfied, you may request to have your concern reviewed by Acute Care Alberta’s Patient Concerns Officer (PCO). The PCO oversees the patient concerns and relations teams for all organizations that fall under Acute Care Alberta.

To start a PCO review, call 1-855-550-2555. Note: the PCO can only investigate your concern once your care provider team/organization’s review is complete.

The Acute Care Alberta PCO review will:

  • Be fair and unbiased.
  • Be performed as timely as possible.
  • Provide an opportunity for the patient to explain their concern to the PCO. Throughout the course of the PCO Review, the patient can contact the PCO Office to further discuss the concern.
  • Conclude with a closing letter which will explain the results thoroughly and include a referral to the Alberta Ombudsman.

Provider-led reporting

The Reporting & Learning System (RLS) is intended to enable and support our commitment to developing a safe culture. It is a quick and easy way for Healthcare Practitioners to voluntarily report Adverse Events, Close Calls and potential Hazards.
